Tutorials

Some great tutorials to use in the classroom for Social Studies are the School House Rock videos. They do a fantastic job of explaining key political functions, how different areas of government operate, along with many other content areas.

These videos can be found at any one of the following websites:

School Tube - this link will provide a variety of School House Rock videos.

Sqool Tools - this link provides access to a large variety of the School House Rock videos as well as their lyrics.

YouTube - they can also be found on youtube.com by searching "school house rock."

Relative Advantage:

Visual examples help to clarify difficult concepts, graphic and video make concepts more concrete, stimulate student motivation, materials are reusable, free, and quick to access, and songs provide a mnemonic device for students to help retain information.

Simulations

Interactive role-playing games are great resources for the classroom.  The provide a way for students to 'experience' the content they are learning about.  This is especially helpful for students learning about historical events, as there is no way for students to physically interact with this information.
There are many great online simulation games, one that I found which is free for students is use is called Mission US.  This website allows students to represent a character during a struggle in American history and see the event from that person's point of view, this person is typically a child around their age.
Mission US - this website has three simulation that students can play through, one for the Revolutionary War, another as a slave fighting to gain freedom, and the final mission is the journey of a young Native American.

Relative Advantage:

Provides a 'real-life' experience for students and enables then to to relate more personally to the material, interactive setting is motivating to the student, and allows self-structured and self-paced environment for students.
