Making an Inference

Throughout elementary grades one aspect of literacy that is continually being reinforced is the idea of an inference. An inference is information that you gain from a story even though it is not specifically stated in the story. Instead the author gives 'clues' and the reader must guess what is going to happen based on the clues given

Below are some great websites for students to use to practice making inferences:

  • What Can I Infer? - this website provides short questions or statements which the students must make an inference from
  • Practice Inference - this website provides a short story and then students are asked several multiple choice questions about the inferences that were made in the story

Both of the above websites provide instant feedback to the students of whether the answer they have selected is correct or not.

Relative Advantage:

Provides practice and reinforcement of content, student feedback is immediate, allows a self-paced structure for individual students, and develops student independence.

Problem-Solving Programs

"Writer's Block"

A common problem among students is 'writer's block.'  Finding inspiration can be difficult when you are in the same setting every day, even when using story development tools like graphic organizers.

The following websites help provide inspiration to students who just can seem to find the words:

Literacy Mapping - this website helps students develop their graphic organizer by providing prompts.  Student can choose which part of the story they would like to develop the characters, setting, conflict, or resolution.

Write About This - this website (or downloadable app) provides visual or audio prompts in order to kick start the writing process.

Relative Advantage:

Provides self-structured learning environments, frees teachers to work with other students, information is faster to access and free to use, interactive aspects provide motivation to students, and develops student independence.
